Self-Care Summer: The Benefits of Aloe and Collagen

Aloe and collagen are two natural ingredients used to promote a healthier lifestyle from the inside out. That’s why this season we’ve added them to our menu for a self-care summer. The two are packed with so many benefits that once you’ve had a taste of them you’ll want to surf the wave of self-care all year long.

The benefits of aloe

Hydrates the skin: If you’ve ever broken up an aloe leaf and squeezed you’ll notice that the plant has a gel-like substance inside. This gel is made up mostly of water so that when applied topically or consumed it hydrates your body, which improves the moisture of your skin. This is especially helpful right before a day in the sun or on the water.

Playa tip: To hydrate from the inside out, grab a Mango Pina Colada Smoothie with mango, pineapple, coconut base, coconut milk and add aloe.

Contains antioxidants and antibacterials: Another benefit of aloe is that it ups the “anti” with vital antioxidants, antibacterials, antivirals, and antiseptics—all used to treat wounds and skin conditions like sunburns, acne, and psoriasis as it removes free radicals that can cause cell damage, like aging.

Playa tip: Our Watermelon Refresh with watermelon, lemon, ginger, and hibiscus helps lower inflammation and is packed with essential nutrients.

Great for the mouth: Not many people would think of this one. But, beyond the skin, when rinsed in the mouth aloe has been shown to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, and can even treat painful canker sores.

Promotes the production of collagen: As aloe hydrates the skin it also acts as a stimulus for the production of collagen, which helps to improve the elasticity of the skin.

The benefits of collagen

Improves the appearance of your skin: As we mentioned above, aloe can help promote collagen production. And the biggest benefit of collagen is that it improves the elasticity of the skin which reduces wrinkles. This makes your skin look plumper and younger.

Playa tip: Our Acai Energy Smoothie with acai, banana, strawberry, and coconut milk will keep you hydrated and energized.

It strengthens bones and joints: Collagen can increase your bone’s mineral density, which decreases joint pain that can come with vigorous activity (like surfing).

Healthier hair and nails: Not only is collagen great for your skin and bones but it can thicken your hair and strengthen your nails. It also helps both grow faster!

Benefits muscle mass: Collagen can make up nearly 10 percent of muscle tissue, so when you increase your collagen intake and production you also increase body and muscle mass (a great tip for anyone interested in upping their workout this season!).

Playa tip: Support your muscles with our Coconut Protein Bites, made with gluten-free granola, vanilla plant protein, coconut flakes, chia seeds, agave, coconut oil, and semi-sweet chocolate.

Now that you know the benefits of aloe and collagen are you ready to dig into them for yourself? For the ultimate taste of self-care summer grab our Glow Bowl. It’s half aloe and collagen blend (aloe, coconut blend, banana, collagen, wheatgrass, and coconut milk) half coconut blend topped with blueberry flax granola, banana, blueberry, coconut flakes, bee pollen, and honey.
